An enchanted evening at the Deering Estate

Last night, The Debbie Orta Jazz Quartet perfomed to a sold out crowd as part of the 5th Annual Summer Cabaret Concert Series. The dim lights in the historic 1922 Stone House Ballroom set the intimate mood for the evening. The extremely personable and stunning Debbie Orta performed two sets of jazz standards and Brazilian Jazz and even returned for one more song after a standing ovation. Each member of the quartet was remarkable with their instrument - Jim Gasior on piano, Nicky Orta on Bass and Carlomagno Araya on drums.

If you missed this concert, don't fret! The Series continues throughout the summer with Sitar Player Stephan Mikes on July 26th and Jazz Vocalist Dana Paul on August 30th. Tickets are only $20 a concert (what a deal!) Be sure to purchase your tickets early because seating is limited and concerts usually sell out.

Island Queen Cruises Welcomes the Miami Lady

Miami, FL (June 19, 2008) – Island Queen Cruises has added a new vessel to its fleet. After 11 months to construct and a remarkable 21 day expedition from the waters of Wisconsin to Biscayne Bay, the Miami Lady is scheduled to begin its’ maiden voyage as early as next week.

The Miami Lady will offer upgraded amenities, as the most modern sightseeing boat in South Florida. Holding 149 passengers and built entirely of aluminum, the 74 foot vessel will replace the reputable Pink Lady, which is set for retreat after touring Biscayne Bay as part of the Island Queen Cruises fleet for over a decade.

When asked about the Pink Lady’s retirement, “I’m going to miss her,” says Haley Sofge, General Office Manager of Island Queen Cruises. He goes on to say, “But it was time for a change. Skipperliner worked with us to design and produce a well built boat, entirely of aluminum for longevity.” This Friday marks the last day of training for Island Queen employees aboard the new Miami Lady, which will begin regular sightseeing tours and dance cruises as of next week.

Cargo Ship Hits Miami Beach Marina

"Undershorts" at the Carnival Studio Theater

The Carnival Studio Theater at the Adrienne Arsht Center (formerly known as the Carnival Center) is a "black box" theater that you have to check out. This is the perfect setting for a comedy show or a play. I recently attended "Undershorts" eight edgy short plays presented by City Theatre. Years ago I attended the "Summer Shorts" series when they performed at the University of Miami's Ring Theatre.

"Undershorts" covers a variety of adult material and takes some subjects to a whole new level. If you get offended easily, this might not be the show for you. Looking for something more appropriate? They also have the Signature Shorts program and the Shorts 4 Kids.

Deering Estate at Cutler

The Deering Estate is simply breathtaking. With two lavish mansions and over 444 acres of natural areas, it is a must see for locals and those visiting Miami. Although its location is pretty far south, the scenic drive on Old Cutler Road is well worth it.

Included with admission ($7 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-14) is the historic house tour and the natural areas tour. The tour guides are very knowledgable and friendly. I found it very interesting that the 1900 Richmond Cottage was the first hotel between Coconut Grove and Key West! On the natural areas tour, we stopped at the Tequesta Indian Burial Mound, which dates from 1500 - 1700, and learned that 12-18 chieftans were buried there face down.

After the tours I walked by the water and visited the Mangrove Boardwalk, which takes you through the coastal wetland and mangrove forests.

I am definitely going to come back for a specialty tour or an EcoAdventure Tour. The Estate also offers a variety of art and health classes.
